What are the Benefits of Wearing a Retainer After Orthodontic Treatment?
Have you recently been liberated from your metal braces , or finished up your Invisalign treatment? We bet you’re glad to have your braces removed, revealing your beautiful new straight teeth and smile!
We’d also bet you’re keen to hold onto that new smile after all that time and care (and money!) so you’ll now want to make sure that it’s an investment that lasts.
That’s why it’s very important that you continue to follow your orthodontist’s advice and plan, even after you’ve gotten your braces removed. To keep your teeth from shifting back, and continue correcting your bite and any minor teeth movements, we recommend using removable appliances – commonly known as retainers.
There are many different types of removable retainer devices that orthodontists recommend using to best preserve your smile. Let’s take a look at some of these options.
This common retainer is used for the lower front teeth. Bonded retainers are glued to the back of the lower six front teeth, with an option to leave it permanently in place to keep those teeth in position. These bonded retainers are very discreet, as they are on the inside of your teeth only. Adults may particularly like this option, as it’s almost invisible to others.
This common retainer is used for the upper front teeth, available in a clear material . It’s recommended for wearing while sleeping, especially to prevent tooth movements during this time. Just pop your retainer in before bed after cleaning your teeth. Both teenagers and adults will feel comfortable with these retainers, as they have no impact on daily life.
Available for either the upper or lower arches, plate retainers will keep all your teeth secured and provide peace of mind after your orthodontic treatment. Be aware that you may need to remove your retainer for eating and drinking – your orthodontist will be able to provide you with specific instructions for your individual treatment.
Banded retainers are provided for patients with specific dental issues. These appliances are glued to the back of the teeth and can be left permanently in place to ensure proper teeth correction.
Whichever retainer you have, make sure you wear it for as long as your orthodontist recommends, to help you keep that dream smile for life.
