Winter Blues and Braces? How to Stay on Track During the Colder Months

dr tony weir orthodontist brisbane

Winter in Brisbane might not bring snow, but the shorter days and cooler weather can still impact motivation—and even your oral health routine. If you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces or clear aligners, it’s especially important to stay consistent during this time of year. In this post, we’ll explore how winter can affect your orthodontic care and share simple tips to help you stay on track.

1. Don’t Let Routine Slip

It’s easy to get a bit sluggish during winter. Cold mornings make it harder to get out of bed, and you might find yourself skipping parts of your usual routine—like brushing and flossing thoroughly.

Tip: Try brushing right after meals to avoid forgetting later, and set a reminder on your phone if needed. Keep your floss or aligner case in visible spots to help prompt action.

2. Watch Out for Comfort Foods

Winter is prime time for warm, gooey comfort foods. Unfortunately, some of these can damage braces or cause aligners to stain.

Be cautious with:

  • Sticky desserts (caramel puddings, toffees)

  • Hard breads or crusty pastries

  • Hot drinks like tea or coffee (can stain aligners)

Choose these instead:

  • Soft soups and stews

  • Warm fruit compotes

  • Herbal teas that are clear and caffeine-free

3. Manage Winter Sensitivity

Cooler air and drinks can trigger sensitivity in teeth that are shifting, especially during the first stages of orthodontic treatment. If you’re experiencing discomfort:

  • Rinse with warm saltwater

  • Use a sensitive-teeth toothpaste

  • Avoid ice-cold drinks or foods for now

Let us know if the sensitivity persists—we may be able to make adjustments or recommend further solutions.

4. Stay Hydrated

In winter, we tend to drink less water—which can lead to dry mouth. Saliva is important for keeping your teeth clean and healthy, especially when wearing braces or aligners.

Tip: Carry a reusable water bottle and sip regularly, even if you’re not feeling thirsty.

5. Use the Mid-Year Mark to Review Your Progress

July is the perfect time to check in on your orthodontic goals. Are you wearing your aligners as often as instructed? Are your braces and appliances in good condition? Any missed appointments you need to rebook?

A quick review now can prevent delays later—and keep your smile on schedule for a smooth finish.

Winter doesn’t have to slow down your smile journey. With a few small adjustments, you can keep your teeth healthy, your appliances protected, and your treatment on track—no matter the season.
